Seeking the New

My 7th grandchild was born this week [and I’m pretty sure I’m not finished.] I really should also count my step grandchildren – I love their mother, but somehow out of sight, … And when I count them I also count my three great-grandchildren. Sadly, none of any of them are Lipps. So what. Progeny are progeny. And I’d be proud for them to count me.

Having a brand new one automatically makes all the rest older. But I title this, “Seeking the New,” mostly because we don’t seem to – We mostly look for changing the old – fixing, eliminating, improving, gaining, winning,… more, better, different.

But the new isn’t this. My grandson makes more – But he is who he is. New. Of course, “there is nothing new under the sun,” but what we think is new, is new.

Seems to me that more, better, different is the essence of the middle of the road – compromising… Maybe it’s how we move forward as a society – compromising until something truly new comes along. What do you think?

Explaining What’s New

I suffer from an endless need
to explain.
I know we never fully understand anybody or anything,
Yet, even while I'm certain that nobody
hears what's said;
that we don't see what’s seen or read
what's read:
that we live in crowds in splendid social isolation;
yet even then, I am compelled
to embellish, to elaborate,
to simplify and clarify –
to try to make it plain

I cannot sustain my own attention
so poems are short,
just enough to tickle your ears.

Some - like this - are prose disguised,
an inquiry into humanity's insanity
and greatness.

Written in poetic form,
I write an idea as a chunk of words
to make it easier to see what I thunk
and think absurd.
