Reaching for What you Want

I always tell my clients to stretch. I say, “we all love to stretch. It feels so good. But mostly we don’t stretch until someone asks us to.” And I wonder why that is.

Reaching is a special form of stretching – It’s physical, meaning going for and it also means having gotten there. And it’s psychological. I always think of it as reaching for. And I visualize it physically as stretching up; reaching for the stars; for the impossible dream.

Why would we ever not? And yet, the more I coach people, the more I see we don’t; we let our own lives get in the way. People think they have reasons. They say reasons and I hear excuses. That’s why I get involved with what is called time management…

We all have reasons – That’s why I advocate being un-reason-able. Being reasonable keeps us in our ‘comfort’ zone. Being unreasonable stretches our comfort zone. Comfort zones are not like rubber; they don’t go back to their original shape. They become your new comfort zone.

Robert Kennedy used to quote Emerson: “A man’s reach should exceed his grasp – or what’s a heaven for?” We spend all of our thought on the first part and too little on the question. When you put all of this together, you’ll get that being unreasonable, extending your comfort zone – is heavenly.

So it’s always worth asking yourself, what’s a stretch? What don’t I go for? Why not?... And then say, “Really?!”

Useful Quotes

The Impossible Dreamers
Michael Lipp

Have we become so jaded
That all our dreams have faded?
To cease to dwell in virtual reality,
Stopped by our view of practicality?
This will never be
To me and thousands even not like me;
And the gap between the dreamers
And the schemers
Must shrink, I think,
Despite the evidence of news,
And the cynicism of so many views
