Knowing Something Else
Last week I wrote about how we ‘know’ something. I certainly like to think I’m rational, but I conclude that I rationalize. I make whatever I do make sense, regardless of what I do.
My friend Ben wrote and said his decisions do work out in the long run. History makes us all smart – It’s always dawn after the darkness, isn’t it?
It’s like playing poker. It’s not the person who has the best cards who wins; it’s the person who plays the cards s/he has the best who wins. So however we decide, it’s what we make of the resulting situation that matters.
What I like about that is that it turns our eyes away from the rear view mirror and has us face tomorrow from where we are today. We can’t help and will benefit from being informed by our past. We can keep from being driven by it – safer not to drive that way.
So I decide by instinct… I decide by trusting who gives me my ‘new’ information – often by a chain of trustings.
Some choices we live not only once but a thousand times over, remembering them for the rest of our lives.
Be willing to make decisions. That's the most important quality in a good leader.
General George Patton
All my life, whenever it comes time to make a decision, I make it and forget about it.
Harry S. Truman
A peacefulness follows any decision, even the wrong one.
Rita Mae Brown
Never give your reasons; for your judgment will probably be right, but your reasons will certainly be wrong.
After a while, everything sounds the same
the news, gurus, the Moody Blues
La Forzzo del Vestina and the vacuum cleaner,
the minutes of the meeting and a flock of geese
After a while, it’s all geese to me.
After a while, everything looks the same
the clouds and crowds and Turin shrouds,
the Himalayas and replacement players,
the newest, best disaster and Super Mario III
After a while, It’s all a game to me.
After a while everything is the same
Wars and whores and candy stores,
a heartfelt look and gobbledygook
Ultimate ennui or the cosmic dance,
After a while, it’s om sweet om to me
And yet, it’s up to – who else - me.
So spin and dance
And take a chance,
It doesn’t matter; be a jerk
All that counts is – make it work
