Autumn Fires

We’ve just returned from a week in the Poconos. On Wednesday the season changed to Autumn - late – Even today I’m not wearing a jacket. Our area is thus far benefitting from our new climate; there’s a longer harvest on the farm.

But I haven’t heard any of our “news” commentators talk of the fires ravaging Southern California as having anything to do with global warming – There are always fires in Southern California. Never like this. Never. And despite the reporting, which may even be true, arson doesn’t mitigate the extraordinary and abnormal scope and ferocity of the destruction.

California doesn’t have seasons like the East. It has fires, mud slides, referendums and Summer. In Los Angeles, it’s cold and nasty until noon and magnificent until 6 when it reverts. I never thought I would feel sad for its weather.

Shedding Rain

Such is life.
The sun shines brightly
and we walk in autumn warmth.
A small breeze cools the face.
Leaves shudder slightly
and the trees shed the last
